What is it like to be a paramedic?
Being a paramedic is hard. Paramedics work long hours with a schedule that is hard on the body (working at night and on the weekend). We often lift heavy weights, and we are more at risk for work injuries. Still, it is the most rewarding job in the world. When you see the gratitude in the eyes of the patients we treat we remember why we are doing this job. Every paramedic has a need of duty and could not imagine doing a job that isn't on the front lines.
What do paramedics do?
We treat patients before they are admitted to the hospital. We take them from where they are, stabilize their general condition, and wait with them at the hospital for them to be seen by a doctor.
What do paramedics do on a typical day?
There is no typical day for a paramedic. We arrive at the barracks and check that we have everything we need in the ambulances. After, we take off to go to what we call a "10-12", which is the radio code for an intersection of two roads where we wait for a call. When we get a call, we go to the patient's resident, if they have a place to live of course, and we take them to the hospital while treating them.
Where do paramedics work?
We work on the road, in the ambulances. And we take off in the paramedic's barracks.
How can I become a paramedic?
Before becoming a paramedic in Quebec, you need to finish three years of Emergency Prehospital Care at a college. After this, you need to pass a theoretical and a practical exam to become part of the register of the paramedics and have the right to practice.
How much money do paramedics make?
If we listen to the website of the Government of Quebec, paramedics between 2020 and 2022 earned between $23 and $35,5 an hour. With the overtime and the bonuses, paramedics earned on average $70k a year.
What kinds of additional training do paramedics need?
Since the profession of paramedics is constantly moving and evolving, paramedics always need to have additional training days throughout theirs careers.
What are the dangers of being a paramedic?
We are most likely to hurt ourselves during work by lifting heavy weights, but we can also be attacked by any patient who we are treating.

None, we always need to have human touch.
What age do paramedics retire at?
Paramedics retire by the age of 60.
Conclusion
I have only 1 year left to complete my training in Prehospital Emergency Care. After that, I am going to spend many years on the road. After a minimum of 3 years, I am going to go to university and do 2 years to become an advanced care paramedic. I am going to end my career by teaching in college, to help other becoming paramedics!
